Deprecation of APSIM 7.10
As of 1st December 2024, the APSIM initiative will commence its final stage of deprecating APSIM 710. This means the following;
- APSIM 7.10 will no longer be updated
- APSIM 7.10 will continue to be available for download and source code available on the ASPIM git hub, however;
- The APSIM initiative will no longer provide software development support to APSIM 7.10
The final stage of the transition to APSIM Next Gen marks a critical milestone in this journey. This phase will prioritise enhancing functionality, expanding model capabilities, and delivering comprehensive and relevant training resources for Next Gen users over 2024-2027 and will include
- The release of new training videos on our YouTube channel
- Advanced training options for users
- Forum discussions on GitHub
Why Choose APSIM NextGen?

APSIM Next Gen is a big leap forward from APSIM 7.10, offering 5 to 10 times faster simulation speeds, saving users valuable time. It also runs natively on Windows, Linux, and MacOS, eliminating the need for virtual machines, which were required in APSIM 7.10 for non-Windows systems.
With the Plant Modelling Framework (PMF), users don’t need coding skills to create models, just drag and drop functions and customise them through the user interface. It also connects to powerful analysis tools like Morris, Sobol, and CroptimizR for fine-tuning models.
With 35 different models to choose from and more to come – see list below, APSIM Next Gen model performance is easy to check through online documentation, which shows how well simulations match real-world data for yield, biomass, and more. Next Gen has been thoroughly tested, with over 20,000 simulations, plus many software unit tests ensuring its reliability.
Graphing in Next Gen is faster and more flexible, handling large datasets with ease. Maintenance is also simpler, as the code is written in one language, making it easier to debug and test. Finally, Next Gen is the focus of all future development, while APSIM 7.10 has been left unchanged for two years.
We are excited to embark on this next chapter with you and are committed to ensuring that APSIM Next Gen continues to meet your needs and drive innovation in your work. Thank you for your ongoing support and collaboration as we advance together into this new era, please send all enquiries to apsim@csiro.au.

Several models in APSIM 7.10 currently lack the necessary validation data, meaning their effectiveness remains uncertain. These models will be migrated to APSIM Next Gen only as demand arises, and when both sufficient funding and the required calibration data become available to ensure their accuracy and performance.
