Response from Jeremy Whish and Publication below:

Hi Chris

Yes i still wish to proceed with this proposal but have not had the time to fully respond to the reference committee. I will do so  soon, but in the meantime some further info on the model I have built.

Attached is a paper showing the real need for a  millet model and why it was built in plant. I agree to build a complete millet model that  can simulate more than plant growth and water use further work needs to be done. My application is that this module be kept in the developers section to be available for use by other scientists looking at millet cover cropping. Currently one PhD student is using the model and he is collecting more validation data sets to test the model.

In time it would be nice to have a fully functioning white french millet model but until funding is available or a student has a need this is not going to happen what we do have is a model that will grow vegetativly and use water at the same rate as plants observed in the field. phenology up to flowering is roughly correct but this is based on limited field data. The model can not be used to simulate grain yield which is why I am only requesting the model be placed in the developers area not the general release.

I hope this clears things up a bit Chris

Could you please econsider this recommendation and respond.

If you still wish to proceed with a new module the following is the minimum information required about a Proposal for consideration by the Reference Panel:

1. Short description of the concept or proposed improvements

2. Rationale and Justification

3. Details of the proposed improvements

4. Implications for users

5. Supporting documentation (optional)

I am happy to discuss in more detail if you have any questions.

To simulate white French Millet for use as a cover crop I developed a model based on Plant. This model is basically only a biomass model and was validated to reproduce the biomass production and water use observed in the field (Whish et al 2009) this work was done using APSIM 5.3 I have recently updated the model to make it suitable for APSIM 7.1. I have a PhD student who is working on cover cropping and would like to use the same millet module. He will help add to the validation data but the intention is to have this model only available in the development section. I suggest that in time data will be collected for grain yield and then a complete validation of the model could be completed. I have some interest from a Chinese masters student to complete this validation over the next 2 years. I would suggest Peter Carberry as a reviewer for this model.
