Subject: Implementation of capacity to simulate transitions between aerobic-anaerobic soil conditions for rice-based farming systems (DO NOT EDIT THIS:1017)

Hi Don,

In order to better assess your major task  of 'Implementation of capacity to simulate transitions between aerobic-anaerobic soil conditions for rice-based farming systems'  the APSIM Initiative Reference Panel are asking for some additional information. To this end could you please address the following:

Minimum information required about a Proposal from Developers:

1. Short description of the concept or proposed improvements

2. Rationale and Justification

3. Details of the proposed improvements

4. Implications for users

5. Supporting documentation (optional)

For using APSIM in sceanrio analysis and simulation of rice-based cropping systems, it is neccessary to model the C&N dynamics as the soil environment transitions between anaerobic (ponded) and aerobic (non-ponded) soil conditions.  Also included in this is additional C&N loss and gain mechanisms which come into consideration in long-term ponded water (such as algal growth, ammonia volatilisation etc).  This task requires the modification of SOILN and SURFACEOM to handle anaerobic conditions, and also the addition of a new module POND to simulate the new chemical processes occuring in rice ponds.
